Pack the Powder on the Mountain

Pack the Powder on the Mountain

There are all kinds of vacation destinations to be explored. Some vacations are focused on the proverbial beach environment. Seldom are we able to permanently reside in tropical locales. The tourist nature of many resort towns provide abundant but somewhat limited job pools. There are lots of incentives to settle in places like this, but there are only so many jobs to support full time residency. As a result, the locales are often unfamiliar to us in an intimate sense. The natural desire of vacation seekers is to explore these places for a better understanding of their cultural and leisure offerings. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the tropical conditions offer a stimulating effect of their own.

Other vacation seekers plan ski holidays that are the perfect vehicles to explore the goings on of a particular ski region. The trips that resorts offer are usually designed to cover all the skiers needs under one roof. Lodging and meals are bundled and sold as packages that entice patrons to explore the mountains. The ski passes required for endless days of skiing often come as an included feature of resort ski packages. Once the primal needs are covered, a ski enthusiast is able to focus on shredding the proverbial powder.

Travel to Las Vegas from London

On the 12th November 2011, the epic WBO Welterweight boxing championship between Juan Manuel Marquez II and Manny Pacquiao will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand.  An incredible amount of boxing fanatics will flock to Las Vegas to witness this fight, of course, and if you are one of these, you may want to know how to travel from London to Las Vegas.

From London, you can travel to Las Vegas from both London Gatwick and London Heathrow, and a flight departs from each airport once a day.  Gatwick is covered by Virgin Atlantic and Heathrow is covered by British Airways.  Flights are quite long – almost 11 hours – so be prepared for a long journey.  Furthermore, the time difference between London and Las Vegas is 6 hours, meaning that you will arrive in Las Vegas feeling like it’s the middle of the night when it is only afternoon.  It is important to be aware of this due to the possibility of jet lag.

The flights described above are direct flights, but it may be worth shopping around to see if you could get cheaper deals by having one or more stop overs.  Prices for these direct flights are between £350 and £500, which is not an amount to entirely break the bank, particularly since you will be able to not only enjoy the fight itself, but also spend some time in Las Vegas.  They say that New York is the city that never sleeps, but those words are actually more applicable to Las Vegas!

So, if you are hoping to be one of the lucky ones to actually watch the big fight live from the MGM Grand, you should have no problems getting to Las Vegas from London at a reasonable price. If you can’t arrange this trip you c an alwasy watch a Pacquiao Marquez live stream on your computer!

Where to Take the Family

Where to Take the Family

If you are a family man, you might face the same dilemma year after year: where am I going to take the family on vacation this year? Fear not, oh poor beleaguered dad, for there is a simple answer awaiting you, just take the family to some kind of holiday or theme park.

Let’s face it dad, holidays parks have become much cooler than they were when you were a boy. Sure, they both might share a few roller coasters and the foot long hot dog – but the similarities tend to end there. No more geek shows behind smoky tents – now it is thrills and chills, and layer upon layer of computer generated awe.

There are theme parks based on religion, as well as theme parks that the children will enjoy. Commonly known theme parks are things like the Disney franchise or even Coney Island in the states. While Coney Island may only be a shadow of what it once was, it is still a place rich in tradition and heritage – not to mention Nathan’s world famous hot dogs.

So when the crew is getting restless because the temperatures are soaring and the schools have said “Enough!” for a few short months, pack the family and find a holiday park full of hot dogs that you will all enjoy. You will create memories that last a lifetime, and no amount of overpriced Disney-fueled merchandising will get in the way of that. Treat the family to a special time and it will become one of the best times of their lives.

Guatavita and the Legend of El Dorado

Guatavita and the Legend of El Dorado

Located in the northern part of South America, the country of Colombia is enticing for its legends and lakes. One of these is Lake Guatavita and the legend of El Dorado. The Laguna de Guatavita is located just 75 kilometers (35 miles) north of the country’s capital, Bogota.

The quaint towns nearby, the reservoirs, the beautiful scenery, and the legend itself make this a great place to visit whether you are by yourself or with your family. The original city of Guatavita is now covered by the lake and used to be the religious capital city of the Musica people who were known for their metal crafts. They used to worship a goddess called Chie during rich ceremonies that brought about the rise of the legend of El Dorado. The chief would cover himself with gold dust and ride a raft out to the middle of the lake with jewelery and other gold artifacts that had been collected from the villagers. He and three to four priests would then throw the gold into the lake. He would then dunk himself under the water to wash off the gold dust. This ritual was believed to bring the people closer to the gods.

Throughout the centuries since the Conquistadors, several gold artifacts have been found at the bottom of the lake, proving this legend true. In the 1960s a new town was built that is now considered to be an architectural heritage site. Residential buildings have been designed in a symmetrical fashion with ceramic tile roofs and white walls, while the city buildings are connected by streets made out of flagstone and cobblestone. During leisurely walks through the town, both residents and visitors alike can see indications of the legend’s events engraved in buildings or from a guide who is more than happy to pass along the story. Any trip to Guatativa should include a visit to the lake itself where you can enjoy many water sports on the lake, bird watching, or just walking around the lake. A visit to the area should also include a walking trip through the quaint town where you can see history come alive by modern crafters working with the local clay and raw wool.

Ferrying

Ferrying

Ferrying people and goods across a body of water is an activity that’s been around since probably before the dawn of history. The need to carry people across a river or a lake is something that certainly predates the ability to build bridges, so you can say that the ferryman trade is probably one of the oldest human professions that are still around. Naturally, ferrying has come a long way since those humble beginnings. Incredible developments in nautical engineering allow modern day ferrymen to carry incredible loads across the water, from people to cars, and also goods. Also, improvements in communication and the advent of the internet have also made taking a ferry easier for the potential clients. You can buy ferry tickets online, check schedules and even plan your trip on the internet.

People might wonder how it still makes sense to ferry people when we now have the technology to build large bridges across even the deepest bodies of water. The answer is not simple, but it’s easy enough to get to it. Sometimes it’s more cost-effective to have a ferry than to build a bridge, while in other occasions both systems work concurrently to ensure that one of them doesn’t get too crowded.
